Entre juin et septembre 2021, je me suis rendu régulièrement au cimetière du Père-Lachaise. Car cet endroit m’a toujours plu : situé en plein Paris, il est à la fois un jardin extraordinaire et une succession de tombes et de tombeaux, un site chargé d’histoire et d’émotion et de tourisme de masse, un lieu de recueillement et de divertissement, un territoire situé hors du temps que l’on doit quand même entretenir au quotidien.
J’ai donc arpenté ce lieu dans l’intention de le restituer photographiquement d’une manière colorée, décalée et humoristique. Car cela correspond à ma façon de voir le Monde, et parce que je trouve que c’est une bonne chose de proposer une représentation joyeuse de ce qui est lié à la mort pour, comme lors de la fête des morts dans la culture mexicaine, inciter à en faire le prolongement naturel de la vie.
Je me suis ainsi intéressé aux tombeaux, à leur décoration, aux statues, aux épitaphes, aux personnes qui le traversent, à son entretien et à des petits détails insignifiants. Ici ou là, je les ai photographiés en plan général ou en gros plan pour construire petit à petit une vision personnelle de ce lieu. Au final, à travers telle ou telle image ou en les combinant entre elles, je propose un documentaire subjectif qui s’éloigne du reportage traditionnel pour évoquer plus que le Père-Lachaise, plus que la mort…

Between June and September 2021, I regularly visited the Père-Lachaise cemetery. Because I have always liked this place: located in the heart of Paris, it is both an extraordinary garden and a succession of tombs and tombs, a site steeped in history and emotion and mass tourism, a place of meditation and entertainment, a timeless territory that must still be maintained on a daily basis.
So I walked this place with the intention of restoring it photographically in a colorful, offbeat and humorous way. Because it corresponds to my way of seeing the World, and because I think it is a good thing to propose a joyful representation of what is related to death to, as on the Feast of the Dead in Mexican culture, encourage to make it the natural extension of life.
I became interested in tombs, their decoration, statues, epitaphs, people who pass through it, its maintenance and small insignificant details. Here and there, I photographed them in general or close-up to build little by little a personal vision of this place. In the end, through this or that image or by combining them with each other, I propose a subjective documentary that moves away from traditional reporting to evoke more than Père-Lachaise, more than death…
